대부분의 회사들은 이런 학습의 딜레마로 인해 큰 어려움을 겪고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 그것이 존재하는지조차 모르고 있다. 그 이유는, 그들은 학습이 무엇인지, 학습을 어떻게 하는지 잘못 이해하고 있다. 결과적으로, 그들은 학습 조직이 되는데 있어서 두 가지 실수를 하곤 한다.

첫째로, 대부분의 사람들이 학습을 너무 좁게 정의해서, 단지 "문제 해결"이라고 여긴다. 그래서 그들은 외부 환경에서 오류(errors)를 발견하고 고치는데 집중한다. 문제 해결은 중요하다. 하지만 학습이 지속되기(persist) 위해서는 관리자들과 직원들은 내부에도 시선을 주어야 한다. 그들은 그들 자신의 행동에 대해 비판적으로 성찰하고, 그들이 종종 무심코 조직의 문제에 기여하는 방법을 깨닫고, 그들이 행동하는 방법을 바꿀 필요가 있다. 특히, 그들은 문제를 정의하고 해결하는 그 방식이 어떻게 그 자체로 문제의 원천이 될 수 있는지를 배워야 한다.

나는 이러한 중요한 차이를 표현하기 위해 "단일고리"와 "이중고리" 학습이라는 용어를 고안했다. 간단한 비유를 들자면: 방의 온도가 68도 이하로 내려가면 난방을 켜는 온도조절계는 단일 고리 학습의 좋은 예시이다. "왜 내가 68도로 설정했을까?"라고 스스로 묻고, 방을 데운다는 목표를 더 경제적으로 달성하기 위한 다른 더 좋은 온도는 없을까 탐색하는 온도조절계는 이중고리 학습을 하는 것이다.
